About the Designer Charles & Ray Eames United States
Charles Ormond Eames, Jr (1907–1978) and Bernice Alexandra "Ray" (née Kaiser) Eames (1912–1988) were American designers, who worked in and made major contributions to modern architecture and furniture. They also worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art and film.
Herman Miller introduced the Aluminum Group in 1958 as a special project by Ray Eames for a private residence being designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard. Eleven years later, they would add plush cushions to make the Soft Pad Group.The original Aluminum group's classic lines and comfortable suspension combined with the plush characteristics of the Soft Pad Group have kept them in demand for years. Perfect for all kinds of spaces, they can be found in contemporary homes, elegant offices and hip startups alike.
The Design
Aluminum Group chairs were developed in 1958 as a special project by Ray Eames for a private residence being designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard.
Eleven years later the Aluminum Group would serve as the basis for the Soft Pad Group which adds thicker padding to the original design for a softer feel and much different look.
As with the original Aluminum Group, seat-back suspension continued to be a major technical achievement and represented the Eames" Departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell.
