Blu Dot furniture (born in 1997) was founded by John Christakos, Charles Lazor, and Maurice Blanks. The firm began as a loose collaboration of three college friends trained in architecture and art, based on the premise that design should be affordable. The partners chose furniture as the subject of interest and opened a studio and operations in Minneapolis in 1996. Blu Dot has begun to realize their vision with a collection of over 40 furniture pieces that are both elegantly abstract and unambiguously functional. Blu Dot pieces are in the permanent collections of several museums, have been seen on the sets of well-known television shows such as Friends and ER, and have won numerous national and international awards. The furniture collection is distributed around the world.

Blu Dot Writing Desk 51
scuffs, scratches, chips
why from bay area
I love the design, but the surface doesn't hold up. Out of the box, the finish is gleaming. First off, the desk smudges easily. I can live with this, but what's worse are the permanent scratches and scuffs. All I keep on the desk are papers, a monitor, and a keyboard with rubber protectors on the underside. As good as the table looks in the showroom, it's surface just won't hold up to even mild use. Along with the scratches, some of the finish on mine also chipped off. It's a small spot, maybe the size of two grains of rice, but it's right in the middle of the pull out tray. I talked to bludot and they said it wasn't covered by warranty as I must have hit it with something. But I didn't hit it with anything. They refused to listen. All of this happened within the first 6 months of owning the desk, so don't expect its good looks to last long.

I ordered this desk to replace a far more traditional one in my home office, and I couldn't be happier. It is very well made, elegant, sleek and perfect for the space. I bought the Slate color; it works perfectly with my earth tones-dominated house. This is a great desk and I recommend it very highly!

Spacious and compact. The sliding shelf is what makes this desk so great for a small office. I couldn't be happier with the thoughtful design. My only complaint is that the shelf doesn't want to close evenly when I push it all the way in--it juts out a bit on one side.

I was concerned this desk would be too minimalist to be useful, but it's actually perfect for our home office needs. The red color is gorgeous, the lacquer finish shiny and cheerful (you do need to keep the microfiber cloth that comes with it handy to wipe off finger smudges.) It was easy to assemble and I'm confident it's a solid piece of furniture. Great price, too. We also bought the Blu Dot file cabinet in white and they look great together.

I bought the slate desk and it is perfect color and size (it is a big desk!). So far it's been very durable and I'm happy with the function of the pull out laptop holder.

I was looking for a sleek low profile desk and found Desk 51. It was not quite large enough due to my work load so when I found the Blu Dot Medium Stut Desk in the same colors that was it! Got them in gray and love it. What a great set up! Lots of compliments. I matched the desk easily with commercial lateral files. It is very sturdy and was easy to set up if you are used to putting this kind of furniture together.
